The Coniunction of the Dual Matter: The Red Twin Moons | Jun 2014
INWARD STONE: STAGE IV — RUBEDO
01. RESEARCH NOTE [Witness Level 02: Practitioner (P)]— Actualising the final coniunction completes the union of seemingly opposite states within the body. The twin red moons confirm the spirit’s acceptance of the flesh, birthing a twin rebis—the double matter born from the fusion of opposite principles (the volatile White Mercury and the fixed Red Mercury) that defines the Philosopher’s Stone during the rubedo. This signals that the personal phase of purification is complete; the exalted spirit at last connects with the material earth.
02. THE VISION — Two perfectly equal full moons hang side by side against a soft, warm orange sky. Each is filled with a deep crimson red and displays clear surface details. The moons sit together, touching, above a flat, dark horizon. The entire scene is balanced, calm, and completely still.
03. THE PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE — The twin moons reveal that the deep, hidden parts of the mind are now fully visible and balanced. While solar visions bring clarity of objective thought, these red moons govern the body’s natural rhythm, subjective depth, and everyday feelings. Their deep colour shows that what was cold spiritual insight has been filled with blood, warmth, and raw life force.
What makes this vision unique is that the moons are identical twins. They do not form a traditional, polarised male-and-female pair (like the Sun and Moon); instead, they are two completely equal circles of the exact same red matter sitting side by side.
This directly mirrors the historical concept of the duo mercurii—the Double Mercury. Originating as a 12th-century astrological theory by the scholar Abraham Ibn Ezra to describe a dual, chameleonic presence in the heavens (‘duo mercurii sunt in celo’), the concept was later pulled down into the laboratories of medieval alchemists. They realised that to fix the shifting, volatile spirit of nature, one had to marry the two hidden mercuries within matter.
The vision captures the precise moment where the historical theory becomes physical reality: the mercurius albus (the purified, volatile White Mercury of the albedo) and the mercurius ruber (the fixed, ennobled Red Mercury of the rubedo) come together. They do not destroy one another; instead, they harmonise into identical forms, proving that the spiritualised mind and the vitalised body have reached equal weight and power.
Hanging low over the land, these twin red moons pull the vast heaven of the flying fleet down from the fading citrinitas sky. By touching the earth’s horizon, this planetary alignment shows that celestial white and the terrestrial red principles have finished their courtship. The duo mercurii have anchored their shared strength into the bedrock of ordinary, waking life.
